GIRLS HOSTEL
In 1955, Joy Tilsley founded Holland Wharf Girls Hostel in Narsapur, India, with a vision to transform the lives of girls from disadvantaged and impoverished backgrounds.
More than 70 years later, we continue to provide a safe and supportive home for girls, including many from vulnerable families or without parental care. Here, girls receive accommodation, nutritious meals, school and college fees, uniforms, books, medical care, and opportunities for further education and vocational training.
The long-term impact is evident in the many girls who have broken out of the cycle of poverty and gone into careers in teaching, nursing, administration and IT —creating positive change for their families and communities.
But today, only 65% of our girls have a sponsor. In 2026 alone, we received around 150 applications from families seeking a place for their daughter at the hostel. Due to a shortfall in sponsorship, we were able to accommodate just 35 new girls.
The need continues to grow. We need to employ more dedicated women to provide the care and support our girls need. Rising cost for food, gas and electricity are placing additional pressure on the hostel, while some of our buildings are more than 100 years old and require significant renovation or replacement.
